A Dollar and a Dream

The Mega Millions jackpot is up for grabs tonight. I already had a winning ticket this week. I played the lottery on Tuesday on the Jackpocket app when the purse was over $800,000.  I woke up at 3:30 a.m. Wednesday with my dog, “Bella,” hovering over me like Freddy Krueger. She usually shakes her chain as an alert, but occasionally scares the hell out of me. I took her outside, crawled back into bed and checked my email. There it was, “Congrats! You won a Mega Millions prize!” Now, I wasn’t ignorant enough to think I won THE prize. You have a 1 in 302,575,350 chance of winning the  jackpot by matching all six numbers. But this is my year. I am working on a book, which I hope to have complete by November. I enjoy my job and am in love with a man who treats me like I deserve. It is life changing to have a partner who supports and encourages you. It was once the norm to get daily insulting messages where I was called things like trash or a selfish slob. If it wasn’t an insult, I would open a text expecting an answer to a question only to be told he would gauge my eyes out with a screwdriver.  I didn’t think it was normal, but it was my reality. It was my humiliating reality.  So, why not me? Maybe I did win a big prize.  I took a deep breath, clicked the email and there it was. I was the winner of …… $2.

I slowly exhaled. My life wasn’t going to change.  I cannot quit my job. I may still need to sell an organ to pay for gas and groceries. (When did Fruit Hoops from Aldi cost as much as Fruit Loops?) But truth be told I already won. I am the first one to see my youngest children when they wake up in the morning and the last one to wish them goodnight. I am on speed dial when is my oldest needs advice or to share good news. I have a supportive family and am surrounded by friends who would help me bury body if I asked. Plus, I am with my soul mate. I may have only won $2, but I am richer than I have ever been.
